How to Stay Sober in a World That Drinks

Alcohol is woven into birthdays, weddings, work socials and quiet evenings at home. Choosing not to drink can feel like standing apart from everyone else.

It becomes easier with preparation. Decide in advance what you will drink and how long you will stay. Have a simple, honest answer ready for anyone who asks. Arrive with someone who knows where you are in your recovery.

Build a social life that does not depend on alcohol — sport, courses, volunteering, recovery groups, and friendships made in sobriety.

Over time the discomfort fades. What replaces it is the confidence of knowing you no longer need a drink to take part.
