How to Help a Loved One in Rehab

Families often feel powerless while someone they love is in treatment. In reality, the way a family responds has a real influence on how well recovery holds afterwards.

Learn about addiction so that behaviour makes more sense and blame has less room to grow. Keep communication honest but non-judgemental. Agree boundaries that protect both of you, and stick to them calmly.

Support the plan rather than replacing it — that means encouraging attendance, structure and secondary care rather than rushing a return to old surroundings.

Look after yourself too. Family therapy and support groups exist because recovery affects everyone in the household, not only the person in treatment.
